Oral cancer is more common in the world than in people living in the Southeast, East and South Asian blocs. Oral cancer can affect your mouth and oropharynx. The oropharynx includes part of the tongue and the roof of your mouth. It also contains the middle part of the throat, which can be seen when the mouth is open. This type of oropharynx cancer can be very complicated and can lead to life-threatening conditions if left untreated.

Oral cancer can affect the following parts of the mouth:

  • Lips
  • Gums
  • Inner lining
  • Two thirds of the tongue
  • The floor of the mouth
  • The area behind the right wisdom teeth

Symptoms of oral cancer

  • You have sores on your lips or inside your mouth that can bleed easily and not heal in two weeks.
  • Rough sounds, rough spots on your lips, gums or inside your mouth.
  • Numbness or pain in the face, neck or in your face which will happen for no apparent reason.
  • Unintentional weight loss.
  • Chronic and smelly
  • Ear pain
  • Bleeding in the mouth without any specific cause.
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, talking or moving the jaw or tongue.

Oral cancer often spreads to squamous cells in the oral cavity. Squamous cells are flattened and when viewed under a microscope, they look like fish scales.
